To improve our streets and protect our community, the City of Ontario is implementing new street sweeping parking restrictions. This program is essential to prevent flooding, protect our stormwater systems, and keep our streets clean.

Why is street sweeping important?

Street sweeping plays a crucial role in removing debris that can clog storm drains, leading to flooding and pollution of our waterways. It’s also a key requirement of both state and federal environmental permits that requires the City complies with water quality standards.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions (as of 1/06/25)

  • Why is the City doing this and when was the program approved?
    • The Citywide Street Sweeping Parking Restrictions program was approved at the July 16, 2024 City Council Meeting per Ontario Municipal Code Section 4-6.1019(c). This program prevents trash and debris from entering the storm drains as required by the federal clean water act and maintain clean curbs swept weekly. Without street sweeping parking enforcement, the sweeper can’t clean the curbs and ends up sweeping the street portion.
  • Why isn’t this only being enforced in areas with dense street parking?
    • Citywide street sweeping parking enforcement ensures curbs are clear for the sweeper to clean debris. This ensures all streets are swept to the proper standards.
  • Why isn’t street sweeping scheduled on the same day as trash day?
    • Trash carts placed on the curb prevent the sweeper from properly cleaning the curbs.
  • What will be my sweeping day and time?
  • Will I get a ticket if I park on my street after the sweeper has already passed?
    • Yes enforcement is based on the day and timeframe posted on the street signage. Although the sweeper may have passed, it may not be completely done with the route or may be between trips to sweep.
  • What is the fine for street sweeping parking violations?
    • The initial ticket issued by the Ontario Police Department is $50 and will increase to $100 if the citation is paid after 30 days.
  • Where can I park on my street’s sweeping day?
    • Each side of the street will have a different sweeping day. This allows you to park on the opposite side of the street on the day the other side is being swept.
  • Why are there so many signs on my street?
    • The California Vehicle Code Section 22507.6 requires signage be placed, at a minimum, at the beginning of the block.  Some street sections may require additional signage based on the length or shape of the street.
  • Who do I complain to if/when people on the next block park in my neighborhood?
    • City streets are open public parking to all regardless of where the person lives. There is no assurance that only residents of a certain block park on that block.
